CASTLE AND MUSEUM
This castle, built in 1279 under Russian rule, is a fine example of medieval Estonian defensive architecture.
The history of the castle begins in 1228, when the Bishop of Riga wanted to form a diocese with the municipalities of Läänemaa, Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. The center of the bishopric was chosen in Lihula and then Pärnu, but when it was destroyed by the Lithuanians, it was decided to build the next edifice in Haapsalu. The site is a fine example of Estonian medieval defensive architecture, built in 1279. In the 17th century, under Russian rule, the castle was dismantled under the orders of Tsar Peter I. The towers became a pile of rubble. The towers became a heap of ruins. Part of it has since been restored.
