PETITES CITÉS DE CARACTÈRE EN PAYS D'ISSOIRE
A fortress that helped defend the village in the Middle Ages.
The Pays d'Issoire boasts many treasures. As proof, four villages have been designated "Petites cités de caractère", thanks to their unique character, history and heritage. On the heights, Le Broc overlooks the Allier valley. A castle was built here between the 11th and 13th centuries. Today, you can stroll around the ruins. Champeix is surrounded by vineyards, a characteristic that is reflected in the architecture of the village, which is occupied by winegrowers' houses. In the Middle Ages, Champeix was home to the Marchidial castle. The base of the keep and the old castle church are still visible. Saint-Floret is one of those small villages you just love to discover. It was protected by fortifications and a fortified castle. Take a stroll through the medieval streets and you'll discover the remains of the castle. The castle's frescoes are worth a visit. To reach Nonette, cross the Pakowski bridge. Its reinforced concrete architecture is a real eye-catcher. In the Middle Ages, the village was defended by a fortress. The fortress is reputed to have been formidable to all enemies. A few vestiges of this era remain: the bases of the towers, the location of the portcullis and the drawbridge. Nonette offers a unique panoramic view of the volcanoes, Le Sancy and the Chaîne des Puys, as well as the Cézallier and Livradois-Forez regions. Sauxillanges, a fifth cité, is in the process of being certified. There are many others in the region.
