It takes 2 km and 3 to 4 hours depending on your pace.
The trail starts from Qasr al-Bint and runs along Jebel al-Habis, then enters a canyon before forking off to the right. It leads to the top of the Umm al-Biyara mountain at an altitude of 1,178 metres. The uphill portion is strenuous and requires good physical fitness. You will know you have arrived when you reach a large plateau with the ruins of a 7th century BC Edomite village and two cisterns that provided water for Petra.
