Inscriptions left by the Thamud depicting camels, caravans, hunting and pastoral scenes
Natural caves at the base of this high mountain provided caravans with a protected overnight stop. The perimeter of one of these small caves has been decorated with graffiti carved into the rock surface. They represent dromedaries, caravans, hunting scenes and pastoral life. These inscriptions were left by the Thamud, an ancient Arab tribe that shared its territory with the Nabataeans. They are known to have occupied Hegra, one of the most important Nabatean cities in northern Saudi Arabia, for a long time.
