ORTENBURG PALACE
A castle whose ruins stand on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 437 meters
The ruins of Ortenbourg stand on a rocky outcrop 437 meters above sea level. The castle takes its name from the Ortenberg family, present in Scherwiller since the 10th century. Built of white granite in the 13th century, it is an admired example of medieval Alsatian military architecture. It features a 32-metre pentagonal keep, a 17-metre rampart with three rows of arches and a seigneurial dwelling with Gothic windows. From the Hühnelmühle, where you can park your car, the climb to the castle takes around 45 minutes.
