Milestones in Scherwiller, indicating the next villages and the names of the donors or patrons of the road
Even in Gallo-Roman times, roads were marked with milestones, precisely every Roman mile, i.e. 1,481.50 meters! Scherwiller still boasts three of these milestones, cylindrical stones weighing one ton on a square base, with an average diameter of around forty centimetres and a height of one to two metres. They indicated the next villages and the names of donors or patrons of the road. One of Scherwiller's three milestones was modified in the Middle Ages, topping it with a cross.
