RAILWAY STATION
An old railway station, used by freight trains, in Tanga.
Built by the British after the First World War, the station is now only used for freight trains. It is worth a look to go back in time. The Germans opened the Usambara Line in 1891, with the aim of linking Lake Victoria and Tanga. The line was always in deficit and only reached Moshi in 1911. The British, taking over Tanganyika from the Germans, linked the Usambara Railway to those of Uganda and Kenya from Moshi and extended it in 1929 to its present terminus, Arusha.
