AMBONI CAVES AND GALANOS SPRINGS
Caves offering an exceptional network of 234 km of galleries, an address to visit near Tanga.
The Amboni caves are located 5 km north of Tanga (follow the road to Horohoro for 3 km, then turn left at the sign 2 km down the track). These caves offer an exceptional network of 234 km of galleries, of which one can visit only a little more than 1 km, which is already not bad, the rest requiring a technique and an equipment of confirmed speleologist. The erosion of the limestone has formed numerous stalactites and stalagmites that make up real natural sculptures. The game is to find a more or less vague resemblance with an animal or an object, which makes the visit very playful, especially for children. In some places, the chasms are up to 50 m deep. You can also see the very straight roots of the wild fig trees from the surface, which look like rusty pipes and go down to more than 30 m into the cave. Many legends surround this place: three branches are said to lead to the vicinity of Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro and Mombasa, Kenya. Even today, some Bantu tribes come here to sacrifice goats to the spirits. Some leave offerings (bottles of drink or coins). The site would have been used as a hiding place for resistance fighters during the German colonization. 3 km north of the caves, the sulphurous hot springs of Galanos bear the name of the Greek who discovered them in 1950 and praised their medicinal virtues. The thermal establishment is very damaged.
