HOLY GHOST MISSION
Church with a remarkable Livingstone tower, the first church in East Africa, in Bagamoyo.
The Holy Spirit Mission was founded in 1868 by an Alsatian missionary Anthony Horner. In 1872 the first church in East Africa was built here, of which only the Livingstone Tower remains. After the death of the famous British explorer Livingstone in Zambia in 1874, his body was brought back to this mission on foot, before being repatriated to Westminster Abbey in England. Next to the tower, the small Catholic mission museum is quite interesting and tells the story of the slave trade, the explorers and the mission.
