KAOLE RUINS
A remarkable site consisting of the remains of two mosques and the impressive "pillar tombs" in Bagamoyo.
The ruins of Kaole consist of the remains of two mosques dating from the 13th and 15th centuries as well as some 20 strange "pillar tombs", unique of their kind on the east coast. After Kaole, another 5 km lead to a good tarred road, which is followed straight on for another 5 km before catching up with the paved road from Bagamoyo to Dar. Further south, 20km before Dar, are the ruins of Kunduchi, with a 16th century mosque and 18th century tombs marked by carved obelisks.
