NATIONAL MUSEUM
Museum in the memorial of King George V in Dar es Salaam, a good place to learn about the history of Tanzania.
The museum, installed in the memorial of King George V, opened in 1974. The explanations are in English and are a bit brief. Crossing the courtyard, you will find the room of marine sciences: many shells, the skull of a rare marine mammal (the dugong). Then take the stairs and visit the "Hall of Man" which traces human evolution on the first floor since the first steps in Africa 4.2 million years ago, thanks to the discoveries of Olduvaï, Laetoli and Isimilia. Tanzania's modern history is told in the following rooms, from the first Greek visitors to the death of Julius Nyerere, the father of independence, in 1999. This is more of a history lesson than an exhibition: the few exhibits brought together are a pretext. The panels evoke the ruins of Kilwa, the discoveries of Persian, then Portuguese and Arab objects all along the coast, the history of the great explorers, Arab slavery, colonization and its wars (the Hehe and Nyamwezi uprisings and the Maji Maji revolt). Then the two world wars, notably the first one between the British and the Germans in East Africa, and finally the advent of the TANU party and the independence, acquired in 1961. The permanent exhibition "Rock art exhibit" highlights the numerous rock painting sites listed in Africa, including that of Kondoa, 150 km north of Dodoma.
