This 882 km 2 marine reserve is the largest protected area in the Indian Ocean and certainly one of the richest with its 50 types of corals and over 400 species of fish. Most of what is to be seen can be observed at a depth of less than 30 m below the surface. Many predatory fish such as turtles or even sirenians inhabit these waters. Fishing and a few other activities are tolerated according to a plan defined jointly between the authorities and the different local communities.
