GREAT MOSQUE

Mosque dating from the 12th century in Kilwa Kisiwani, the largest on the East African coast.
It is probably the largest on the East African coast. The building was excavated between 1958 and 1960. The oldest part, the northern end, is thought to date from the 12th century, and the mihrab room from 100 years later. A domed roof supported by barrel vaults on numerous pillars covers it. Like the small mosque, it is now unfortunately only used to house goats. On the south side is the ablutions basin and a house with kitchens and toilet basins, which would have been the residence of the sultan or the imam.
