HUSUNI NDOGO FORT

Fort built in the 15th century, an old caravanserai, in a lush setting at Kilwa Kisiwani.
This rectangular fort, built in the 15th century and once flanked by towers, is now covered by vegetation that is difficult to penetrate. This building was a caravanserai intended to accommodate merchants and caravans coming from the interior. It was then used by the Portuguese to store their supplies, including pigs from Europe, which now live wild in the forest where the Muslim inhabitants leave them alone. Here grow wild cotton trees introduced at the same time.
