Unfortunately, the site of Tell el-Amarna does not have the gentleness of its close neighbour, and the first impression you are likely to get is the right one: a huge expanse of white sand, barren and inhospitable, swept by the winds. If we exclude the two or three tombs that still retain some choice bas-reliefs, there is nothing left of Akhenaten or anything that would be of interest to a non-archaeological visitor. Of all the tourist sites in Egypt, Tell el-Amarna seems to be one of the most difficult to recommend because of its location, its inaccessibility, the time it requires, and what it offers.
