A year later, on July 25, 1799, the French did it again, emerging victorious against the Turkish army. Finally, on March 8 1801, Abercromby defeated Bonaparte's fleet, which evacuated Egypt.
Not far from Aboukir was the ancient city of Canope, where the Ptolemies erected at least two temples. This Greek name was later given to the four vases in which the viscera of the pharaohs were kept.
