EL-MAHALLI MOSQUE
Restored mosque with 99 columns supporting its ceiling, another room for ablutions and 6 entrances.
The El-Mahalli Mosque was built in the 16th century and restored in the 18th century. It is best known for its 99 columns that support its ceiling (the most symbolic number in Islam, one for each of the "names of God") and which are reused from ancient monuments of Alexandria. Another room for ablutions is supported by 14 similar pillars. The six entrances, as well as the door to the mausoleum of Sheikh Ali al-Mahalli, are surmounted by the red brick that is characteristic of the city's monuments.
