QASR EL-ZAYYAN
Revamped Ptolemaic temple dedicated to the god Amenebis, comprising two halls, a vestibule and a sanctuary.
"To Amenibis, the great god of Chonemyris and to the other gods of the temple, for the eternal preservation of Antoninus Caesar (...)" is the welcoming inscription! This temple of the Ptolemaic period was redesigned by Antonin the Pious in the 2nd century AD and dedicated to the god Amenibis. Only the hard stone temple remains today, consisting of two rooms, a vestibule and a sanctuary, while the mud-brick enclosure has disappeared. Nevertheless, the site has not yet benefited from a thorough campaign of excavation and systematic restoration.
