This hilltop fortress, complete with cannons, is El Quseir's most famous historical site.
Located in the city centre on top of a hill, the fortress is the most famous historical site in El Quseir. It was built in 1517 by order of Sultan Selim I to protect its port of transit. It was then a strategic place for Egypt's trade with Arabia and Asia and also for pilgrims heading to Mecca for the annual Hajj. The military structure was enlarged in 1800 by the French, as evidenced by the projecting cannons left in place to defend the site. Pleasant walk.
