The RENFE, the Spanish Railway Company, offers a constantly improved service despite a twofold handicap: a gauge of the paths different from that of the rest of Europe and a dense network with a nerve centre located in Madrid. To compensate for these shortcomings, the State devotes huge sums to the improvement of the network and the construction of new routes on the European standard, in order to allow European high-speed trains to travel to Spain. Thus Barcelona should be connected to Perpignan by a high-speed line shared between the TGV for France and the AVE (the Iberian TGV) for Spain in the coming years. In order to develop such a company, the two states must agree on a large building, a double-track tunnel through the chain of the Pyrenees. The line was due to come into being in 2005, but the site that was delayed was set at the end of 2012 (or more). On the other hand, Barcelona will be linked to Zaragoza and Madrid by the AVE which already works between Madrid and Seville. In addition to the AVE, on the Barcelona-Valencia-Alicante section, the RENFE has implemented Euromed, which has the same comfort and services as high speed trains.
A big difference: due to traditional routes, its speed does not exceed 150 km/h. At these last generation trains, you must add the Talgo, which provides the fast routes between large cities, regional and suburban trains (Cercanias).
In Spain, the train remains a cheap means of transport and allows for reductions.
