Festival of the Book and the Rose. Sant Jordi honors Saint George, patron saint of Catalonia, whose legend permeates the Catalan imagination. The valiant knight is said to have saved a princess from the clutches of a terrible dragon. When he plunged his sword into the heart of the beast, a red rose sprang from its blood and was offered to the princess. Thus, the tradition is that on April 23, men offer a rose to their beloved, and receive a book in exchange. Flower and book stands are set up throughout the city.

Malgré les révidincations indenpendentistes qui se sont venues rajouter à la tradition, une belle fête où l'amoureux offre une rose rouge à son amoureuse, et lui reçoit un livre, en souvenir de Cervantes.
