Monastery with a charming fountain containing a selection of works of art, furniture and liturgical objects

The monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes was founded in 1327 by order of Queen Elisenda de Montcada, wife of Jaume II of Aragon. It was originally surrounded by a wall of which only two watchtowers and two of the access doors remain. The building is divided into two parts, one open to the public, the other reserved for the religious community of Poor Clares, who have been living there since the 14th century. Its vast three-story cloister is a magnificent example of Catalan Gothic with its pointed arches supported by delicate columns. It frames a charming fountain surrounded by cypress trees, orange trees and a garden of medicinal plants. The cloister gives access to the cells, the former refectory, the pharmacy and the chapter house. In the former dormitory of the nuns, the exhibition dedicated to the "treasures of the monastery" brings together a selection of artworks, furniture and liturgical objects acquired by the community over the centuries. Next to it is the recently renovated Capella de Sant Miquel, decorated with superb mural paintings by Ferrer Bassa dating from 1346 and inspired by the Italian primitives. An exhibition shows the exciting work of restoring the paintings. Near the presbytery, in a tomb flanked by two statues, lies Queen Elisenda, who died in the monastery in 1364. She is depicted in queen's habit on the church side, and as a penitent on the cloister side. In the church, the 14th century stained glass windows and various tombs of noble families are noteworthy.
