MUSEU DEL DISSENY DE BARCELONA
Museum of Decorative Arts with beautiful collections of furniture, art objects, tapestries and exotic pieces
In order to bring together the dispersed collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts, Ceramics, Textiles and the Graphic Arts cabinet, an avant-garde building was built in 2014 on Plaça de Glòries. Compared to a stapler because of its silhouette, this building signed MBM Arquitectes brings together 3,500 square meters dedicated to the permanent exhibition and several rooms to host temporary exhibitions. The Decorative Arts section traces nine centuries of creation and evolution, from pieces designed by the Arabs to the achievements of contemporary artists, including objects from the Baroque period. There are also beautiful collections of furniture, works of art and tapestries from various houses of Barcelona's nobility. Also not to be missed is the section dedicated to textiles, which displays fabrics from the 13th to the 20th century, instruments used in the Catalan textile industry, clothing, costumes, hats and stockings. There is also a very fine collection of exotic pieces (Peruvian, Inca, Indian, etc.). In the section dedicated to graphic arts, do not miss the typefaces of the Royal Printing House (18th and 19th centuries). The graphic design collection includes an interesting selection of Catalan posters from the late 19th century to the present day. Good to know: the museum's cafeteria is excellent! Take advantage of it to have a coffee break with a pastry.
