MUSEU ETNOLÒGIC I DE CULTURES DEL MÓN
Museum of World Cultures honoring the artistic and cultural heritage of 4 continents
Inaugurated in 2015, the Museum of World Cultures honors the artistic and cultural heritage of four continents: Africa, Asia, America and Oceania. Diversity and coexistence are the key words of this museum with global content. The permanent exhibition has over 30,000 pieces to discover. This incredible collection has been assembled since the 1940s by Barcelona's public institutions and private collectors.
The museum occupies two splendid medieval palaces on Carrer de Montcada: the Palau Nadal, formerly the home of the Barbier-Mueller Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (now closed), and the Palau del Marquès de Lió, which housed part of the collections of the Museu del Disseny (now housed in the new building on Plaça Glòries).
Among the many works on display, the room of African ritual masks, the aripa statues from the oceanic continent, the Asian shadow puppets, and the cuchimilcos, those symbolic Peruvian figurines placed in tombs, are not to be missed. Also note the curious collections from Indonesia, including a nineteenth-century divination book and other mysterious objects. Temporary exhibitions on cross-cutting themes are also organized throughout the year. Since 2018, the Museum of World Cultures has been combined with the Ethnological Museum of Barcelona, located on Montjuïc Hill, to form a single entity: the Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món.
