Museum of Contemporary Art hosting cultural activities and organizing some temporary exhibitions
The MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona is an international flagship for contemporary art and cultural practices. As well as housing the city's most important collection of contemporary art, the museum also offers an extensive program of temporary exhibitions and organizes a variety of cultural activities such as guided tours, family workshops, concerts, performances and seminars.
The most eminent contemporary voices and movements come together at MACBA, in an ever-balancing tension between its institutional role and its critical, transformative purpose. Designed by Richard Meier and located in the center of the bustling Plaça dels Àngels, Barcelona's skater's meeting point, the museum's main building was inaugurated in 1995. Influenced by the work of Le Corbusier and offering his own interpretation of rationalism, Meier was able to create a remarkable play of light thanks to the large glass walls and metal structures on the building's exterior. On the second floor, the permanent collection, comprising over 5,000 works, is a veritable fresco of twentieth-century art, from materialist abstraction to the present day (including Miró, Tàpies, Warhol and Basquiat). You'll also find the book or gift you're looking for in the museum store, and take a break for a drink on the terrace of the Macba bar, the gateway to the Raval.
