MUSEU NACIONAL D'ART DE CATALUNYA (MNAC)
In the Montjuïc National Palace, an exceptional collection of mural frescoes and a tour of Catalan art.
The National Art Museum of Catalonia occupies the Palau National, built for the 1929 International Exhibition and then remodeled in the 1990s by the Italian architect Gae Aulenti. The museum is renowned for its collection of Romanesque art, considered one of the finest in the world. It gathers murals dating from the 11th-14th centuries from small Romanesque churches in the Catalan Pyrenees. The strappo technique was used from the 1920s onwards to transfer these previously dispersed works. Of particular note is the Christ in Majesty from the apse of Sant Climent de Taüll, one of the highlights of the collection. The rest of the museum's collection includes Gothic paintings and sculptures from the most important moments in Catalan history, with works by Catalan (Ferrer Bassa, Dalmau, Huguet, Bonassá, Martorell), Valencian, Aragonese and Castilian artists. The most important works of the Renaissance and the Baroque, a period of decadence for Catalonia. Also, some pieces from the Spanish Golden Age (Zurbarán, Berruguete, Ribera, Velázquez, El Greco). Finally, a superb collection of modern Catalan art with modernist and noucentista pieces, including a section dedicated to decorative arts. You will see paintings by Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol and Joaquín Sunyer. Several rooms in the museum are also dedicated to hosting temporary exhibitions.
