The most complete collection of Joan Miró's works, gathered in a jewel of rationalism designed by Josep Lluís Sert.

The greatest works by the Catalan painter are brought together in this foundation, inaugurated in 1975 on Montjuïc hill. Housed in a rationalist building conceived and designed by Josep Lluís Sert, the foundation is home to the most complete collection of Joan Miró's work, comprising paintings, sculptures, engravings and drawings. The building is very open, multiplying materials while maintaining a simplicity that not only opens up brightly-lit spaces, but also highlights Miró's creations. These clean lines leave plenty of room for the painter's innovative research in all kinds of disciplines. From an immense collection of over 14,000 works, only a small selection are on display in the museum. The collections are organized around several thematic sections, from Miró's earliest youthful works in the village of Mont-roig to his creations of the 1940s-1970s, when he affirmed his taste for the imaginary and the simplification of subject matter. You can see some of the artist's masterpieces, such as Man and Woman in Front of a Pile of Excrement (1935) and Woman Dreaming of Escape (1945). Miró's superb sculptures are also on display on the museum's roof terrace, including the emblematic Caresse d'un oiseau (1967), made up of several assembled objects. In the rest of the rooms, the Foundation also organizes temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, while an experimental space is reserved for young artists (Espai 13).
