POPEETE TOWN HALL

Inaugurated in 1990, Papeete Town Hall and its elevated forecourt overlooking the old Chinatown form a vast complex of some 6,000m2. Set on a finely-trimmed lawn decorated with tropical plants, this recent edifice has little in common with modern architecture, and even less in common with colonial art and traditional architecture. Pastel-yellow walls with white colonnades on the balcony, red-tiled roof, small bell tower in the middle of the summit; the building is more reminiscent of what you might find on Disneyland's Main Street (without the glitz and glamour): a simple building in bold, bright colors, meticulously and finely crafted by architect Rodolphe Weinmann, and clearly reminiscent of a princess's castle. With good reason: it was directly inspired by the palace of Queen Pomare IV.
The town hall is a pleasant, clean, almost luxurious place: marble floors, chandeliers, finely chiselled railings... Not only is it functional, it's also aesthetically pleasing. Inside, don't miss the council chamber, with its engraved glass paintings depicting the town's history, or its rococo elevator. Outside, the gardens have been embellished with a fare pote'e, water features and monumental sculptures dubbed "the colossi of the Papeete Town Hall gardens". As a result, the dance performances that are regularly given here become real enchantments. All in all, a wonderful visit!
