SOKOLLU MEHMET MOSQUE PAŞA (SOKULLU CAMII VE KÜLLIYESI)
Completed in 1571, it is one of the most successful works of the architect Sinan. The complex consists of a mosque, a medersa, a derviches convent and a fountain with ablutions, installed on a rough terrain with a precise geometric plan. The mosque has a large central dome supported by two half-cupoles on its side parts. The building is decorated with very remarkable ceramic tiles from Iznik of the sixteenth century. The medersa, with its gutted rooms, surrounds the courtyard on three sides and is lined with a flat roof peristyle. The large classroom is placed in the north. The facades of the fountain with ablutions are carved and adjourned. The derviches convent, for its part, consists of a central area surmounted by a dome and ceremonial ceremonial (semahane) halls extending on the sides. The mosque contains four fragments of the Black Stone of Mecca.
