RELIGIOUS COMPLEX OF SULTAN SELIM (SULTAN SELIM KÜLLIYESI)

Composed of a mosque, a hospice, a popular dining hall, a basic school, a hammam and several tombs, it is located on one of the hills overlooking the Golden Horn. Started by architect Cmpa Ali at the time of Selim I, it is finished under Soliman le Magnificent, probably by Sinan the Architect. Only a part of the whole is still intact today. The mosque, located in the centre of the complex, has a large prayer room covered with a dome that supports a window pierced by windows. The height of the arches supporting the large dome being less than the diameter of the dome (approximately 25 m), a certain crushing effect is felt. On each side of this room, two side doors give access to two annexes surmounted by nine small domes. The finely chiselled imperial box is supported by marble columns. The door and window components are in carved wood. The mausoleum of Sultan Yavuz Selim (Selim the Bold) is in the courtyard near the mihrab of the mosque. The calligraphy on ceramic panels mention that the mausoleum was built in 1523 by Soliman le Magnificent. The octagonal monument covered with a dome has on its front a portico supported by four columns of marble. Fenêtres of the windows and the cupola are sculpted in chiselled. The catafalque of Selim I am tinged with mother-made mother. The imperial princes mausoleum is in front of this first monument. It is a octagonal coupole building, also bordered by an peristyle. The dome, walls and windows are. The ebony door is impregnated with ivory and surrounded by Céramique ceramic tile panels dating from the th century. Inside, the five catafalques contain the remains of the daughters of Selim and the sons of Soliman le Magnificent.
