Literally "underground mosque", this singular edifice lives up to its name: it has occupied the former cellars of Galata Castle since the mid-18th century, and is therefore... underground! With its 54 pillars and labyrinthine corridors, it exudes a unique mystique. The site was once a Byzantine fortress forming part of Constantinople's defense system. The famous chain blocking the entrance to the Golden Horn started here.
