Built between 1553 and 1555 by Sinan the Architect on behalf of Sinan Paşa, brother of the Grand Vizier of the time, who was a Grand Admiral in the Ottoman fleet. The mosque's courtyard is bordered by a peristyle supported by 22 columns and covered in tiles. As the porticoed courtyard was reserved exclusively for imperial mosques, the placement of a medersa in front of the mosque was a way of circumventing this prohibition. The mosque's interior ornamentation is finely chiselled.
