NEW MOSQUE OF THE MOTHER SULTANA (YENI CAMII)
The word Valide refers to the Sultana Mother. Because several mosques bear the same name in the neighborhood and to avoid confusion, this one is called that. The donor was Ahmed III's mother, Emetullah Rabia Gülnuş. Built in two years (1708-1710), the outbuildings and mosque occupy a large plot of land, allowing entry through several gates. A public fountain surrounded by elaborate wrought-iron gates, a mausoleum and an observatory were built next to each other towards the southeast corner of the courtyard wall. The elementary school has been pierced by a large opening, into which the courtyard's northern entrance door to the mosque has been built. The dome that covers its central space is supported by four half-domes on the sides. The imperial apartments, built of wood, are located to the east. The octagonal marble ablutions fountain is decorated with calligraphy by the master Taib Tchelebi. The public fountain adjoining the mausoleum has a leaded dome, with another fountain to its right in a style characteristic of the Tulip Era. The fountain on the wall of the canteen, a large building to the north of the mosque, is distinguished from the others by its 3 faces adorned with fine fluted columns. The mausoleum of Sultana Emetullah is a columned monument, linked by finely wrought and braided grilles.
