It was built for Rum Mehmet Paşa, vizier of Mehmed II the Conqueror, between 1471 and 1472, as confirmed by the mosque's epigraph. It is particularly remarkable for its woodwork. Overhanging window arches and alternating beds of brick and stone give the building a Byzantine appearance. The mausoleum(türbe) of Mehmet Paşa, located at the rear of the mosque, is an octagonal ashlar structure.
