VALID ATIK MOSQUE (VALID ATIK CAMII)
Located in Toptaşı, on a vast, rugged plot of land, it is part of a complex built between 1577 and 1583, in accordance with the wishes of the mother of Sultan Murad III (1574-1595), Sultana Nurbanu. It is one of the largest complexes built by the architect Sinan. In addition to the mosque, the complex includes a medersa, a dispensary, a caravanserai, a hospice, a canteen and a Koranic reading college, all built in close proximity to each other. The central space of the mosque is surmounted by a dome resting on six pillars, and extends into two lateral spaces each covered by two domes. The inner part is covered by four domes, while the outer part has a pitched roof. The building is clad in 16th-century Iznik ceramic panels. The marble minbar is carved with geometric motifs, and the imperial box is adorned with 18th-century chasing. The rectangular courtyard is bordered by a domed peristyle. The medersa, which adjoins the mosque wall, is built on a classical plan, with rooms lined up along the courtyard and bordered by a portico. The large classroom is located in the eastern wing. The complex's dispensary is to the east of the mosque. The double hammam consists of a vaulted frigidarium (dedicated to cold baths), a tepidarium (warm baths) topped by a cupola in the center and a caldarium (hot baths) with a large cupola.
