GREAT PALACE AND PALACE OF MAGNAURA
The origin of this palace goes back to Emperor Justinian who decides to completely reshape the Palatium Magnum (Grand Palais or Sacred palace), a residence built on the image of Rome by Constantin I, which burned at the famous Nika rebellion in 532. Enlarged on this occasion, the ensemble consists of several buildings, including the palace of Magnaura, extending from Sainte Sophia to the sea of Marmara, at the level of the imperial port.
This is where after the fourth crusade, Saint Louis carries the Relics (the Victory Cross, the Real Cross, the Lance, the Nails, Blood, Sponge, the Shroud, the Purple Coat) which still today make up the liturgical treasure of the Sainte-Chapelle-de-Paris.
Plundered and seriously damaged, the palace loses favours of the imperial class after the recapture of the city (1261). Finally, the Sultan Ahmed I will make the Blue Mosque, permanently sweep the remains of the palace.
