MAUSOLEUM OF ABDÜLHAMID IER (SULTAN I. ABDÜLHAMIT TÜRBESI)
The mausoleum was part of a religious complex (külliye) whose construction began in 1775 under the reign of Abdülhamid I (1774-1789). Built in 1781 by architect Mehmet Tahir Ağa, on two levels and in classical style, the old mederasa is now home to the Trade Exchange. The library, also on two levels and whose ceilings are surmounted by arêtes vaults, is at the angle of mederasa. The public fountain, dominated by a dome, has water points on its two facades. The mausoleum, built by the same architect as the mederasa, is a square area with rounded corners. Covered with a dome, it has an vestibule and its doors and windows are infused with @. It contains the catafalques of Abdülhamit, Murad IV and several heirs. It is rare to see the empty mausoleum (especially during religious holidays), because near the sultan's catafalque, it would be the traces of the prophet Muhammad (in the wall, in Turkish kademi erîf). Having suffered from the earthquake of 1999, the whole had undergone a serious restoration.
