MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MODERN SANAT MÜZESI)
History. The Istanbul Modern project began in 1987 with the first international exhibition of contemporary art, now known as the Istanbul International Biennial. In 2003, the4th Warehouse on Galata Pier, near the Mimar Sinan Academy of Fine Arts, hosted the 8th Istanbul Biennale. After then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave his approval for the site's repurposing, the dry goods warehouse owned by the Turkish Maritime Organization was transformed into a temple of modern art.
Visit. Since 2023, the museum has been relocated to Galataport. Perfectly integrated into its surroundings, the building's architecture by Renzo Piano is impressive. The water covering the museum's roof (much to the delight of the seagulls!) creates a mirror effect between the lights of the sky and the glitter of the Bosphorus. The Museum of Modern Art is considered the most important in Istanbul. Local and world-renowned artists rub shoulders here or are the subject of temporary exhibitions and retrospectives. The museum is obviously dedicated to art, but it's also a place to live, with a café, library, bookshop and restaurant. You don't have to be a fan of modern art to visit, as each floor offers a new view of the city and, once on the roof, you'll enjoy an exceptional panorama of Istanbul and the Bosphorus.
