The Sultan's Mosque Beyazıt (1389-1403) dates from 1391. Initially, it was surrounded by several other buildings for religious use (külliye). The only mausoleum beside it (1406) contains the tomb of the sultan who suffered a bitter defeat against Tamerlan (1402). It is said, moreover, that the Ottoman rulers up to Murat V (1623-1640) never went there in order to flee this fateful destiny. Further on, the first hospital in the Ottoman Empire (Darülşifa).
