GELIBOLU YARUMADASI
Now a national historical park, the whole peninsula is dedicated to the Turkish and foreign soldiers who died during the First World War. It is a very important place of memory for the Turks who come there in great numbers on weekends. First city in Europe to surrender to the Ottomans, it became the shipyard from which the galleys left to blockade Byzantium. The old fortified harbor is nowadays very narrow for the fishermen's boats. At the arrival of the ferry, the crowds are indifferent to the statue of Piri Reis, a great navigator born here around 1470.
