Located on a 977 m high hill, these thick walls were built by the Galatians, fortified by the Byzantines (9th century) and then by the Seljuks. Once through the main entrance, the Parmak Kapısı, the cobbled, winding alleys and wooden houses make you forget the big city. Many typical houses have been transformed into restaurants, art galleries or souvenir stores. The Alaeddin Mosque and its carved walnut minbar, one of the oldest buildings in Ankara (1197) is a precious example of Seljuk wood art.
