The evolution of the city has been dependent on the beginnings of Christianity, from the difficult times (flight, underground life) to the influence in the Byzantine period. 5 chapels, 1 cistern, 2 workshops (wine and ceramics), 2 control towers, 1 monastic complex and traces of the ancient city centre have been discovered. Recently cleared, the Sümbül Ini Church (8th century) is designated as the church where St. Paul preached. Gökyurt is reminiscent of Cappadocia with its rock dwellings
