LAODICEA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
Archaeological site of one of the seven churches of Revelation. Laodicea was founded in the th century BC by the Syrian King Antiochos II who gave him the name of his wife. The city is part of the kingdom of Pergamos before being occupied by the Romans. A rich merchant city, she was famous for the quality of her cotton. The existence of a large Jewish community may explain the success of Christianity among its inhabitants. Laodicea is one of the seven churches cited by Saint John in his Revelation. The current ruins date back to Roman times (nymphaeum, gymnasium, thermal baths, stadium, theatre). However, since most of the stones of the site have been moved to be used in recent constructions and systematic searches have not been carried out, the site offers only interest for insiders.
