Built under the Commenes (1238-1263), Saint Sophia is the jewel of the city. This former Byzantine church converted into a mosque is worth a visit. The building was initially a basilica with three naves. On its south porch pediment, a sculpted frieze represents Adam and Eve. The interior of the church is decorated with magnificent frescoes from the 13th century. In the central apse are the Virgin and the Child Jesus. The newlyweds like to have their picture taken in the park on Saturdays.
