The hira gasy is a very popular rural opera. Its origin goes back to the 18th century, when the sovereign Andrianampoinimerina undertook to extend the rice fields and invited artists to come and encourage the dyke builders. Dancers, musicians, acrobats and masters of public speaking (kabary) answered the call and this was the beginning of a peasant art present throughout the country. Today, the troops follow one another in an authentic folklore, bringing together all levels of society. These shows range from Antsirabe to Fianarantsoa.
