It
is near the airport (4 km), and halfway between the latter and Ambodifotatra ("the capital"), on the west coast of Sainte Marie Island, that we dropped anchor in 1982 and opened the "LAKANA" with only 03 bungalows in 1985: a love story between an island and a hotel establishment.
it was the 5th hotel existing on Sainte Marie Island ... The first 4 no longer exist, the Lakana is therefore the oldest establishment on the island!
From a basic infrastructure at its creation, the hotel has evolved a lot over the years, on the one hand in terms of comfort and facilities, but also in terms of its capacity since it currently has 16 bungalows, for which natural building materials have been used to keep this character resolutely turned to the integration of the site ''garden island'' that is Sainte Marie.
The hotel's garden offers a "botanical walk" that will familiarize you with the plant species found on the island, and you will observe "radiata" turtles in their park.
The preservation of the environment remains a major concern in the development of the hotel and it is within this framework that a solar electrification was set up in 2022.
The bungalows built on the water in the lagoon, exclusive to Lakana, have also contributed greatly to its reputation, as well as the pontoon at the end of which a swim in the face of the setting sun ... or the full moon, in the turquoise waters of a lagoon, leaves an unforgettable memory

An atmosphere of calm and tranquility is ensured by a multitude of lounge areas scattered around the bar and restaurant
..
In terms of catering, improving the quality of the cuisine has been one of our main concerns, and that is why, as part of the extension of its activities, the hotel has acquired a vegetable garden, a chicken coop and a cellar that supply the hotels on the island: Lakave du LAKANA has become the place to be in Sainte Marie for wine lovers, with its corresponding partner in Ambodifotatra: the COMPTOIR des ÎLES.
The
hotel offers a wide range of activities and various excursions with its various service providers/partners to the most popular sites of the island: Ampanihy Bay, Île aux nattes, natural swimming pools, Ambohidena forest, Circuit des Forbans, etc.
..
Sainte Marie Island, a former pirate's hideout in the XVIth century, has become a Mecca of Malagasy tourism and ecotourism: located on the east coast of Madagascar, it offers its 60 km length and its 2 to 5 km width to its visitors who discover, imagine and live their old childhood dreams: Robinson, the Black Pearl, William Kid, La Bigorne, Rackam le Rouge, La Buse, Peter Pan, etc... Reality and imagination are mixed..
The "Circuit des Forbans" is an excursion not to be missed because it is full of history, it includes the first church of Madagascar (1857), the entrance porch of the East India Company, the cemetery of the Pirates or Saint Peter's cemetery, the islet Madame (name given by Sylvain Roux in honor of the daughter of the king of France), which islet is located opposite the island of the forbidden, .. on the island of Sainte Marie, famous pirates such as Thomas Tew, Thomas White, La Buse, David Williams, etc. settled at the end of the 16th century and attacked the galleons loaded with spices and treasures from the Indies.
But Sainte Marie is also one of the last sanctuaries of humpback whales: every year from June to October they gather in the shallow waters of the Sainte Marie channel to give birth, look for a mate and perform frenetic nuptial parades before mating... and offer magnificent shows to whale watchers.
It is necessary to live an incursion in the lands surprised by a sudden tropical rain, to protect oneself summarily with a palm of ravinala or banana tree, to exchange a few words with villagers while waiting for the lull and the return of the sun, and to taste this moment with pleasure because the whims of the weather are not rare in Sainte Marie and are part of the "local realities"!
sainte Marie is an island that lends itself to a change of scenery, to intimacy, to walks and to communion with nature. It is thus as an island of discovery that Sainte Marie can constitute a tourist product for a small number of people who attach value to this character and are ready to spend more, to escape the banality of the traditional tourist stations. This type of product responds to an international demand that will only increase: that of a tourist destination evoking harmony with nature, a feeling of refuge and calm far from any pollution

And if we have chosen Sainte Marie to build our life here and the "LAKANA" it is for all this
