The timber-framed dovecotes on stilts are typical of the Grande Limagne region.
Timber-framed dovecotes, built on stilts, are typical of the Grande Limagne region. Beautiful pigeon and dovecotes can be seen at Saint-André-le-Coq, Montpensier, Villeneuve-les-Cerfs, Bussières-et-Pruns, Ennezat, Chaptuzat, Chappes and Saint-Laure, etc. Like many others across the plain, they are of great architectural and historical value. Before the French Revolution, these small buildings were a sign of the wealth of the farms. Every farm had one. Pigeons were bred for their droppings, known as colombine, used as a high-quality fertilizer.
