POREČ - A CITY WITH A THOUSAND YEARS OF HISTORY

Entering the historic heart of Poreč, you set foot on a stage that is over 2000 years old. The 400 m long and 200 m wide peninsula was divided by the ancient surveyors into insulas, plots of land allocated for housing, public institutions, temples, and interwoven into a regular street network. Most of this grid plan has been preserved as well as the ancient names of its longest parallel and perpendicular streets Decumanus and Cardo Maximus. EUPHRASIAN BASILICA

Poreč's most valuable cultural asset, the Euphrasian Basilica, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. This early Christian enclosure is the world's only complete preserved monument from this period. Built at the time of Bishop Euphrasius in the 6th century, it includes an atrium, a baptistery, an episcopal palace, mosaics and the remains of sacred buildings dating from the 3rd to 4th centuries. The mosaics decorating the interior and the façade of the church are considered a precious legacy of Byzantine art, and thanks to the mosaics on the floor and the preserved writings, the periods of its construction and renovation can be read.

OUTDOOR SPORTS ACTIVITIES

Poreč and its surroundings have close ties with active holidays, sports and recreation suitable for all ages. Poreč's climate is conducive to outdoor sports activities almost all year round, while in the hotels you have fitness rooms, wellness facilities, saunas, gyms and indoor swimming pools. For the more romantic, the mild Mediterranean climate is ideal for cycling and walking. Some of you may be encouraged to go horseback riding, while those with both feet on the ground will hardly be able to resist the call of the attractive hiking and climbing trails. During your summer holiday, you can discover your hidden talents at one of the various sports schools or get fit on the fields where world-famous athletes have played. In the tourist villages and camps as well as in the hotels, there are about 20 sports fields and courts, futsal courts, bowling alleys, golf courses and mini golf courses. Poreč also boasts some grass football pitches, four multi-purpose sports halls as well as bowling and squash halls. Outdoor table tennis tables, air shooting, archery, darts, snooker, chess and bowling. You can also hire bikes and scooters to go on adventures. Entertainment for the whole family is guaranteed on exciting go-kart tracks.

RESTAURANTS IN POREČ

The restaurants in Poreč are sure to impress you with their selection of creative dishes. Taste specialties based on fish, crabs and shellfish from the Adriatic, Istrian prosciutto (cured ham), spring delicacies based on wild asparagus and autumn gastro-creations based on aphrodisiac truffles. Sommeliers recommend white wines such as Istrian Malvaizija (Malmsey), Chardonnay, Pinot blanc and gris and red wines such as Teran, Merlot and Cabarnet Sauvignon.
