CENTRAL MARKET (GRADSKA TRŽNICA)
Market in Rijeka, a favorite meeting point of the locals considered a true historical monument.
This market is a true historical monument. People come here to shop and admire this covered market hall, built from plans by the architect Izidor Vauchnig, starting in 1880. In the first two pavilions, the latest technical advances of the time were used: steel for the foundations, opening large covered arcades, glass for the light entering through large windows. As early as 1866, the fishmonger's shop was installed in a permanent building, providing an enclosed space for vendors who had previously displayed their wares in the open air. In 1914, Carlo Pergoli designed a building near the jetty for fish storage, and in 1916, the main building crowned the ensemble. His taste for the Viennese Secession can be seen in the work on the capitals, the four fountains and the ornaments on the façade. Reliefs depict fruits and vegetables, and numerous sea animals. The bright, harmonious main building houses the stalls of butchers, charcutiers and cheesemongers. Outside, market gardeners and small local producers shelter under large parasols.
Trading customs have changed since then, but the building has never failed in its commercial and social function. Today, wine and olive oil merchants, beekeepers and honey sellers, woodworkers and florists all contribute to this lively hive of activity. A favorite meeting point for the locals, it's a must in the morning in Rijeka.
