II PALAČE - RECTOR'S PALACE (KNEŽEVA PALAČA)
The beautifully restored Governor's Palace features modern, contemporary and multimedia art collections and temporary exhibitions.
At the time of Venice's domination of the city, Zadar was administered by a rector (governor) and a fleet captain. The Serenissima therefore provided accommodation for these high-ranking officials. The palace was badly damaged during the Second World War and the last war of independence. With the help of European subsidies, the museum was able to reopen to the public in 2017 as a brand-new, completely refurbished interior of almost 2,000m2, while respecting the historic façade. This reconstruction and enhancement plan has great ambitions for the future of the historic city: in addition to the complete restoration of the architectural complex, the building is designed to become an international cultural hub, which will strengthen the tourist offer based on heritage resources and contemporary creation.
On the first floor, in the temporary exhibition halls, a great deal of space is devoted to modern and contemporary art, but the palace also features an atrium, a concert hall, a video gallery, a multimedia room and educational areas. The1st floor houses the permanent collections, including the black-and-white photographs of Ante Brkan, collections of icons, the graphic work of Ivan Palčić, a pupil of the painters Bela Čikoš Sesija or Vlaho Bukovac, who became close to Zagreb's bohemian scene and was a friend of Antun Gustav Matoš, and a string of apartments showcasing national furniture from past centuries.
